Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy
Neurodiversity-affirming · ADHD & Autism · Creswick, Brisbane & Online
Therapy that honours the way your brain works, not one that tries to change it. We provide a safe, flexible, and sensory-considerate space where neurodivergent people can explore their experiences without judgement or pressure to conform.
Our Philosophy
What does neurodivergent-affirming mean?
The neurodiversity paradigm recognises that neurological differences, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurotypes, are natural variations in human brain development. They are not deficits, disorders, or problems to be solved. They are simply different ways of experiencing and interacting with the world.
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy starts from this foundation. It means we never treat your neurodivergence as the problem. Instead of trying to make you think, behave, or appear more neurotypical, we work with you to understand your own needs, build on your strengths, and address the things that are actually causing you distress, whether that is burnout, trauma, masking fatigue, or navigating a world not designed for your brain.
This is fundamentally different from deficit-based approaches that frame neurodivergent traits as symptoms to be managed. In a deficit model, stimming might be discouraged, difficulty with eye contact might be treated as a social skills deficit, and sensory needs might be minimised. In our practice, these are respected as part of who you are.
We believe the goal of therapy is not to make neurodivergent people indistinguishable from neurotypical people. The goal is to help you live a life that feels authentic, sustainable, and genuinely yours.
What affirming looks like in practice
- ✓Flexible session structure, not rigid 50-minute talk-only formats
- ✓No forced eye contact, ever
- ✓Stimming is welcome and never discouraged
- ✓Sensory needs are asked about and accommodated
- ✓Communication preferences are respected (verbal, written, visual)
- ✓Sessions can be shorter or longer depending on your capacity
- ✓Breaks are built in when needed
- ✓Camera-off telehealth is always an option
- ✓Movement during sessions is encouraged if it helps you think
- ✓Processing time is given without pressure to respond quickly
- ✓Identity-first language is used as default (autistic person)
- ✓Self-identification is respected, diagnosis is not required
Who This Is For
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy is for you if…
Autistic Adults
Whether you received your diagnosis in childhood or are only now recognising yourself as autistic, we provide a space where your experience is understood and validated without pathologising language or expectations of conformity.
Adults with ADHD
Living with ADHD in a world designed for linear thinkers can be exhausting. We help you work with your brain rather than against it, addressing the real impacts of executive function differences, emotional dysregulation, and societal misunderstanding.
Combined Presentations
Many people are both autistic and have ADHD, known as AuDHD. The intersection of these neurotypes creates a unique experience that requires a therapist who understands how they interact and sometimes conflict with each other.
Late-Diagnosed Adults
Discovering you are neurodivergent as an adult can be life-changing. We specialise in supporting people through the complex process of reframing their entire life history through a new lens, with all the grief, relief, and identity shifts that brings.
Women & Non-Binary People
Diagnostic criteria have historically been based on how neurodivergence presents in young boys. Women, non-binary people, and gender-diverse individuals are disproportionately missed, misdiagnosed, or diagnosed late. We understand these patterns.
Gifted & Twice-Exceptional (2e)
Being gifted can mask neurodivergent traits, and being neurodivergent can overshadow giftedness. Twice-exceptional people often fall through the cracks of support systems. We recognise and work with the full picture.
Sensory Processing Differences
Whether you experience sensory overwhelm, sensory seeking, or both, we understand that sensory processing is central to the neurodivergent experience and integrate this understanding into every aspect of our practice.
What We Work With
Common experiences we support
Neurodivergent people often arrive in therapy not because of their neurodivergence itself, but because of what happens when the world consistently fails to accommodate who they are. The distress is real, but the source is often environmental rather than inherent.
We help you untangle what is genuinely causing you difficulty from what you have been told is wrong with you. That distinction matters, and it changes the entire direction of therapy.
Experiences we commonly see
- ✓Autistic burnout and chronic exhaustion
- ✓Masking fatigue and the toll of performing neurotypicality
- ✓Executive function difficulties and daily life management
- ✓Sensory overwhelm and shutdowns
- ✓Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD)
- ✓Meltdowns, shutdowns, and emotional regulation
- ✓Workplace difficulties and career uncertainty
- ✓Relationship challenges and communication differences
- ✓Identity confusion or grief after a late diagnosis
- ✓Trauma from being misunderstood, bullied, or forced to conform
- ✓Anxiety and depression co-occurring with neurodivergence
- ✓Navigating the diagnostic process as an adult
How We Work
Our approach to neurodivergent-affirming therapy
Flexible Sessions
Every session is adapted to what you need on the day. Some days that means structured goal-oriented work. Other days it means sitting with something difficult, or processing through movement, drawing, or silence. We do not follow a rigid script because rigid scripts do not work for most neurodivergent people. Sessions can be adjusted in length, frequency, and format. We offer in-person sessions at our Creswick and Brisbane clinics, as well as telehealth across Australia with full camera-off options.
Sensory-Friendly Practice
Our therapy spaces are designed with sensory comfort as a priority. We maintain calm, low-stimulation environments with adjustable lighting and minimal background noise. You are welcome to bring fidget tools, wear sunglasses, use noise-cancelling headphones, or anything else that helps you feel regulated. We ask about your sensory profile before your first session so we can prepare the space to suit you, not the other way around.
Trauma-Informed ND Support
There is a significant intersection between neurodivergence and trauma. Many neurodivergent people carry complex trauma from years of masking, social rejection, medical trauma, or being forced into compliance-based therapies. We use EMDR adapted for neurodivergent clients, alongside somatic and relational approaches, to process these experiences safely and at your pace.
Late Diagnosis & Identity
Discovering you are neurodivergent as an adult
For many adults, discovering they are autistic or have ADHD does not come through a childhood assessment. It comes through a social media post that resonates too deeply, a child's diagnosis that mirrors their own experience, or a therapist who finally sees what everyone else missed.
Late diagnosis often brings a complex wave of emotions. There is grief for the years spent struggling without understanding. Relief that there is finally an explanation. Anger at the systems and people who missed it. Confusion about who you really are underneath all the masks you built to survive.
This is some of the most important work we do. We help you sit with all of those feelings without rushing to resolve them. We support you in reframing your history, not as a series of failures, but as evidence of extraordinary resilience. And we walk alongside you as you begin the process of unmasking, discovering what you genuinely need, and building a life that fits who you actually are.
Unmasking is not a single event. It is a gradual, sometimes uncomfortable process of learning to let go of the persona you built to navigate a neurotypical world. It involves rediscovering your own preferences, needs, and boundaries, many of which you may have suppressed for so long that you no longer recognise them.
In therapy, we create space for this process to unfold safely. We do not push you to unmask faster than you are ready to. We recognise that masking has been a survival strategy, and that letting it go requires trust, time, and a genuinely safe environment.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, self-identified, or still exploring, you are welcome here exactly as you are. No performance required.

Common questions about neurodivergent-affirming therapy
What does neurodivergent-affirming actually mean in practice?
It means we view neurodivergence as a natural form of human diversity, not a disorder to be fixed. In practice, sessions are flexible in structure, sensory needs are accommodated, and we never ask you to mask or perform neurotypicality. Our goal is to support you in living well as a neurodivergent person, not to make you appear less neurodivergent.
Do I need a formal diagnosis to access neurodivergent-affirming therapy?
No. You do not need a diagnosis of autism, ADHD, or anything else to work with us. Many people seek therapy while exploring whether they might be neurodivergent, and that exploration is something we welcome and support. Self-identification is respected here.
Can I use Medicare rebates for neurodivergent-affirming therapy?
Yes. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you can access Medicare rebates for sessions with our eligible therapists. You do not need a specific neurodivergence diagnosis for the care plan, a mental health concern such as anxiety, depression, or burnout is sufficient.
Do you diagnose autism or ADHD?
No, we do not provide formal diagnostic assessments. However, we can support you through the process of exploring whether you might be neurodivergent, help you understand what assessment involves, and refer you to appropriate diagnosticians if you choose to pursue a formal diagnosis.
What does a sensory-friendly practice look like?
Our spaces are designed with sensory comfort in mind. We offer adjustable lighting, minimal clutter, and quiet waiting areas. You are welcome to use noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, or sunglasses during sessions. Online sessions can be done with cameras off if that feels more comfortable. We ask about your sensory needs before your first appointment.
Is EMDR suitable for neurodivergent clients?
Yes. EMDR can be highly effective for neurodivergent people, particularly for processing trauma related to masking, bullying, medical trauma, or being misunderstood throughout life. We adapt the standard EMDR protocol to suit neurodivergent needs, including pacing, sensory modifications, and flexible bilateral stimulation options.
I was diagnosed late in life and I am struggling with my identity. Can you help?
Absolutely. Late diagnosis is one of the most common reasons neurodivergent adults come to us. Discovering you are autistic or have ADHD as an adult can bring a complex mix of grief, relief, anger, and confusion. We provide a space to process all of that, reframe your life story, and begin building a life that truly fits who you are.
Do you work with neurodivergent children and adolescents?
Our neurodivergent-affirming approach primarily supports adults and older adolescents. For younger children, we recommend seeking a practitioner who specialises in paediatric neurodivergent support. If you are unsure, contact us and we can help point you in the right direction.
