Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Questions about getting started, how sessions work, and what to expect from therapy at Bloom. If there's something else on your mind, get in touch.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is mostly a conversation. Your therapist will ask about what's brought you in, a bit of your history, and what you're hoping to get from therapy. You don't need to prepare anything — just come as you are. It's also a chance for you to get a feel for the therapist and ask any questions you have.
How do I know if I've found the right therapist?
The relationship between you and your therapist matters enormously. A good fit is usually a feeling of being heard, respected, and not judged — even from the first session. If after a few sessions something feels off, it's completely okay to say so or to try someone else. Getting the fit right is worth the effort.
Can I do therapy online?
Yes. We offer secure telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in Australia. Many people find online sessions just as valuable as in-person — and the convenience of being at home can actually help some people feel more relaxed. If you're not sure whether telehealth is right for you, just ask.
How often should I come to therapy?
Most clients start with weekly or fortnightly sessions. As things improve, many people move to monthly check-ins. The right rhythm is something you and your therapist will figure out together based on what you're working through, your schedule, and your budget.
Is everything I say in therapy confidential?
Yes. What you share in sessions is confidential. There are limited legal exceptions — if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or in cases of mandatory reporting obligations — and your therapist will explain these clearly at your first appointment. Outside of those circumstances, nothing is shared without your consent.
What if I'm struggling between sessions or feel like I'm in crisis?
If you're in immediate danger, please call 000. For mental health support between sessions, Lifeline (13 11 14) and Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) are available 24/7. If something comes up that you'd like to speak to your therapist about sooner, reach out via the practice and we'll do our best to support you.
Do I need a GP referral to start therapy?
No. You can self-refer and book directly with any of our therapists. A GP referral (Mental Health Care Plan) is only needed if you want to access the Medicare rebate. Many clients come without one.
What if I want to change therapists?
That's completely okay and more common than you might think. If you'd like to see someone different at Bloom, just let us know — there's no awkwardness in asking. Getting the right fit is the priority, and we'd rather help you find it than have you leave therapy altogether.
