Understanding Trauma
Your nervous system is trying to protect you
Trauma is not just what happened, it's what happened inside you as a result. When experiences overwhelm our capacity to cope, the nervous system encodes them differently. This can leave lasting imprints: in our thoughts, our bodies, our relationships, and how we move through the world.
Trauma responses, hypervigilance, numbness, shutdown, reactivity, are not signs of weakness or being "broken." They are the nervous system's best attempt to keep you safe. Trauma therapy works with these responses, gently and safely.
Our therapists specialise in trauma. We use evidence-based approaches that honour both the mind and body, and we work at a pace that feels right for you.

Evidence-Based Approaches
How we work with trauma
EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most well-researched trauma therapies. It helps the brain process and integrate stored traumatic memories.
Learn more →Somatic Therapy
Trauma lives in the body. Somatic approaches work with physical sensations, breath, and movement to release stored trauma and restore nervous system regulation.
Ego State Therapy
Draws on Internal Family Systems and parts-based work to gently engage with different aspects of self, particularly helpful for complex and developmental trauma.
Schema Therapy
Explores deeply held patterns and beliefs formed in early experiences, helping to understand and shift the ways trauma has shaped how we see ourselves and others.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Integrates somatic and cognitive approaches to address trauma held in the body, supporting completion of incomplete survival responses.
Trauma-Focused CBT
A structured, evidence-based approach that addresses the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours connected to traumatic experiences, particularly effective for single-incident trauma.

FAQ
Common questions
What if I don't have clear memories of what happened?
Trauma doesn't always come with a clear narrative. Many people experience it as body sensations, emotional reactions, or patterns of behaviour rather than clear memories. Trauma therapy works with what's present — you don't need to have a full story to start.
I worry that talking about trauma will make things worse. Is that a real risk?
It's a really common concern, and it's worth taking seriously. A good trauma therapist won't push you to revisit difficult material before you're ready. We work at your pace, build safety first, and use approaches that are designed to reduce distress rather than increase it.
What's the difference between PTSD and complex trauma?
PTSD typically follows a specific traumatic event or events. Complex trauma (sometimes called C-PTSD) usually develops from prolonged or repeated experiences — such as childhood abuse, neglect, or domestic violence. It often affects self-worth, relationships, and emotional regulation in deeper ways. We work with both.
Do I need a diagnosis to access trauma therapy?
No. You don't need a PTSD diagnosis or any other formal diagnosis to come to therapy. If you've been through something difficult and it's affecting your life, that's enough.
