Breaking the Silence

Men experience trauma too

Men who have experienced abuse, assault, or trauma often face additional barriers to seeking help, including cultural expectations, shame, and the belief that what happened shouldn't affect them. But trauma affects everyone, regardless of gender.

Our therapists provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can speak about your experiences without fear of disbelief or dismissal. We have specific experience working with male survivors of childhood abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence.

Reaching out is an act of strength. You don't have to carry this alone.

We support male survivors with

  • Childhood sexual abuse
  • Sexual assault and rape
  • Domestic and family violence
  • Physical or emotional abuse
  • Institutional abuse
  • PTSD and complex trauma
  • Shame, guilt, and identity
  • Relationships and intimacy
  • Anger and emotional regulation

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

I'm not sure what happened to me 'counts'. Is that a common feeling?

Very common. Male survivors often minimise or question their experiences — partly because of how society talks (or doesn't talk) about men as victims. If something happened to you that you didn't consent to, or that hurt you, it counts. Your experience is valid regardless of who did it or what form it took.

I've never spoken to anyone about this. Where do I start?

The first session is simply a conversation — there's no pressure to share everything straight away. You can go at whatever pace feels right. Many men find that even taking the step of booking an appointment shifts something. You don't have to have words for it yet.

Will the therapist understand the specific challenges men face?

Yes. We're aware of the ways gender shapes how men experience and respond to abuse — including the silence, the self-reliance, and the particular kind of shame that often comes with it. This isn't generic therapy repackaged — we understand the specific context.

I'm worried about confidentiality. Who will know I'm accessing therapy?

Nobody unless you tell them. All sessions are strictly confidential. If you use Medicare, a referral from your GP will be in your medical records, but what you share in sessions is not disclosed to your GP or anyone else without your consent.
