Couples Therapy in Ballarat
Creswick clinic, 15 minutes from Ballarat · Telehealth · Gottman & EFT-informed
Couples therapy is most useful when both partners want it to work but cannot get there on their own. We support couples through conflict, disconnection, betrayal, neurodivergence in relationships, parenting friction, and the long aftermath of trauma. In-person at our Creswick clinic 15 minutes from Ballarat, or via secure telehealth.
Relationships
Most relationship pain has a pattern, not just a cause
Couples rarely arrive in therapy because of a single event. The presenting issue is usually a pattern — the same argument that goes nowhere, the pull away and chase, the silence that lasts longer each time. Underneath the pattern is usually each partner trying to feel safe and seen in the way they learned to as a child.
Good couples therapy makes that pattern visible. It slows the cycle down enough that you can both see what is actually happening, name the unmet needs, and try something different. It is not a referee handing out points. It is a structured space to do work that is too hard to do alone in the kitchen at 9pm.
We draw on Gottman Method principles, Emotionally Focused Therapy, attachment-informed work, and trauma-informed practice. For couples where one or both partners are neurodivergent, we adapt the work to reflect that.
Couples therapy is not the right tool for every situation. If there is active family violence, ongoing infidelity, or coercive control, individual support comes first. We will help you find the right path at intake.

Our Approach
Structured, paced, both partners heard
We use an assessment phase before treatment, which is standard practice in evidence-based couples work. The first sessions look different from later sessions, and that is intentional.
Assessment
An initial joint session followed by individual sessions for each partner. This lets us understand the relationship history, each person's individual story, and any concerns that need to be heard privately. By the end of assessment we have a clear sense of what is driving the patterns and what kind of work will help.
Slow the cycle, build safety
Most couples therapy work happens here. We slow conflict down in the room so you can see the cycle for what it is, build communication skills that actually work under pressure, repair small ruptures as they happen, and start to feel each other again.
Deeper repair and integration
As the surface stabilises, deeper work often follows. Old attachment wounds, intergenerational patterns, sexual reconnection, or processing specific traumas that have shaped the relationship. The work shifts from putting fires out to building something new.

FAQ
Common questions
Do both partners need to be on board for couples therapy to work?
Generally yes. Couples therapy works best when both people are willing to look at their part. If one partner is unsure, we can often work with that ambivalence in the first sessions. If one partner is unwilling to attend at all, individual relationship-focused therapy is often a better starting point and we can support that too.
Can we claim a Medicare rebate for couples therapy?
Medicare currently rebates individual sessions with eligible mental health practitioners, not joint couples sessions. Some private health funds cover couples therapy under their extras cover. We are happy to walk you through your options at intake.
Do you offer Christian or faith-informed couples therapy?
Yes. Some of our therapists are experienced in working with couples whose faith is a meaningful part of how they want to do the work, including Christian marriage counselling. We are also fully affirming of all faith backgrounds, LGBTIQ+ couples, and chosen-family structures.
Do you offer telehealth for couples?
Yes. Couples telehealth works well when both partners are in the same room together (rather than calling in from separate devices). Many Ballarat couples prefer this option because it removes the logistics of getting both diaries aligned for an in-person session in Creswick.
